Bordeaux, France, the capital of Aquitaine, is well known as one of the world’s finest wine producing regions. The region is home to over ten thousand wineries, (Chateaux), producing and exporting fine wines.

Visitors to Bordeaux will have the opportunity to visit famous vineyards such as Lafitte, Mouton, and many more. One interesting lesson visitors learn is that the wines of Bordeaux come from three varieties of locally grown grapes. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Fran, and Merlot are the grapes used in the entire areas wine making.

Don't fool yourself into thinking wine is only thing going in Bordeaux. The area is rich in history with over ten-world class museums located in the city. The Museum of contemporary Art, Museum of Aquitaine , Museum of decorative Arts, the botanical Gardens, and the Natural History Museum all offer free admission on the first Sunday of each month.

Many ruins and ancient relics can also be seen throughout the city. Bordeaux was founded by the Gauls in the 3rd century BC and became a famous port city. It was later colonized by the Romans who have left their mark on the city. The Esplanade des Quincones is the largest public square in Europe and contains many fine examples of bronze statuary. The statures, in danger from approaching Germans during World War II, were removed into hiding for many years. To the delight of tourists and local alike, the bronze statues have been restored and replaced in the square for all to enjoy.
